Jul 15, 2021The most exhilarating journey a man can undertake is the journey of self-discovery. But this journey requires two things: radical self-honesty and the brotherhood of other men.
A man cannot escape the bondage of his own weakness if he lives by lies. He must speak truth, first to himself and then the world. If he speaks truth he will do truth, and truth is a door way to self-discovery.
A man can't escape the bondage of his own weakness without the brotherhood of other men. Only men can teach men how to be a man.
The brotherhood a man belongs to must be men who live in truth. If they don't, the lies are affirmed and the weakness continues. The door to self-discovery closes and the journey is cut short.
A tree can't grow without water and light. The water and light come from outside of the tree. But as the tree drinks in the water and light it becomes strong and weathers the storms when they come. The storms make it stronger.
No man is an island. Wisdom comes from outside the man, not from within. A man may be wise, but the wise man is wise because of a lifetime of experience living within the truth. He has learned, and much of what he has learned came from those wiser than him.
That's how wisdom is passed from one man to the next. That's how we learn from men stronger than ourselves.
